Before the Meeting:

  • Research Thoroughly: Use credible sources like wage analysis reports and HR policies to understand what a reasonable increase might be.
  • Prepare Your Request: Have specific amounts in mind (e.g., Amount A and B) based on your research.
  • Schedule Wisely: Arrange a meeting with your boss during the middle of the week, avoiding Mondays and Fridays.
  • Practice: Rehearse your pitch with a mentor to gain confidence.

DON’T:

  • Procrastinate: Start your research and preparation early.
  • Show Up Unannounced: Always schedule a meeting in advance.

  • Be Honest: Focus on your achievements and be genuine in your conversation.
  • Stick to Your Plan: Keep your goals and bottom line in mind.
  • Consider Alternatives: Be open to discussing other forms of compensation or benefits.
  • Ask for Feedback: Seek constructive advice for future improvements.

DON’T:

  • Get Discouraged: Stay calm even if the conversation doesn’t go as planned.
  • Exaggerate: Don’t bluff or inflate your accomplishments.
  • Bring Negativity: Avoid bringing up gossip, grudges, or unrelated issues.
  • Leave Without Clarity: Make sure you agree on a reasonable timeframe for your boss to respond.

After the Meeting:

If You Receive a Positive Response:

  • Thank Your Boss and Mentor: Show appreciation for the outcome.
  • Keep It Private: Do not discuss the details with anyone except your mentor.

If You Receive a Negative Response:

  • Thank Your Boss and Mentor: Appreciate the discussion and the feedback.
  • Ask for Feedback: Inquire about other opportunities for advancement.
  • Stay Motivated: Don’t give up or think less of yourself—consider other growth opportunities within your organization.
  • Keep It Private: Share the outcome only with your mentor.

If You Receive No Response:

  • Follow Up Respectfully: Tactfully ask for an update.
  • Be Patient: Don’t be pushy in your follow-up.
