WSB Team Recognized at Congressional Hearing for WIOA

(El Paso, TX) June 14, 2021 – Workforce Solutions Borderplex (WSB) is proud to announce that its Digital Solutions program was recently recognized at a Congressional Hearing for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).  On Thursday, May 27, Portia Wu, Managing Director, Public Policy, US Government Affairs at Microsoft, spoke about WSB’s own Digital Solutions Program at the House Education and Labor Committee. The Committee convened a hearing “Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Reauthorization: Creating Employment Pathways for Dislocated Workers.” Ms. Wu heard about the Digital Solutions Program from Jonathan Childress, the Microsoft Community Engagement Manager for El Paso. Jonathan has been a very supportive partner of WSB and was one of the architects of the DTS program, along with Alma Aranda, Workforce Development Director.

WSB is mentioned here at the 1:02 mark and again at the 2:02 mark.

“We take pride in what our digital solutions team has done to help businesses during COVID-19.  Through the incorporation of transformation strategies, and with the support of our partners, we truly impacted hundreds of employers,” said CEO Leila Melendez.

At the hearing, WSB’s Digital Solutions Team was referenced as an example of how strong employer-based digital transformation preserved jobs and helped workers develop new skills during the pandemic.  “For example, during the pandemic, the El Paso-based Workforce Solutions Borderplex (WSB) partnered with the City of El Paso, El Paso County, Microsoft, and the Texas Workforce Commission to launch a program to help entrepreneurs and small business owners upgrade and expand their operations with technology. The program helps businesses to establish an online presence and provides basic digital literacy training for employers and employees. More than two hundred businesses have already participated, and the program continues to help more businesses and their workers adapt and grow.
